Thanks for being here today!!!

Paranormal Romance: Vampires, Ghosts and Werewolves Optional

Writing fiction together and staying in love for more than a decade leads us to the inescapable conclusion that all romances are paranormal.

Paranormal (from the Greek for “beyond”) is a term typically applied to experiences that lie outside normal experiences or current scientific explanation. Lately, the word is often paired up with “romance” to characterize a kind of fiction that features elements of the supernatural. (Shameless plug: A perfect example is The Cowboy and the Vampire). As paranormal romance authors, we love the depth, intrigue and sensuality of these Gothic elements, but lately we’ve been wondering if the title is a bit misleading.
What romance isn’t paranormal?

For anyone lucky enough to experience a romantic attraction, it’s anything but normal. It makes your heart do funny things like skip beats or speed up, it makes you weak in the knees, it makes you do crazy stunts, and it physically hurts you when you’re not with the person you love. Romantic relationships almost by definition are beyond “normal.” Even though scientists may perfectly understand what’s causing all the various chemical and physiological reactions, they will likely never understand why the body goes haywire when certain pairs of eyes meet across the room.

We are still caught up in a paranormal romance some 15 years after our eyes first met across the stainless steel counter at a busy vegetarian restaurant. It was Kathleen’s first day as a waitress and Clark was working as a sous-chef in the kitchen. There above the rosemary chicken and Hungarian mushroom soup, our eyes met, our souls collided and our poor bodies experienced all sorts of unexpected reactions from floods of endorphins to swarms of stomach butterflies. Obviously, paranormal forces were at work. We never stood a chance.

Even though it took a few tries, and several years, to get all of that energy under control and focused into a relationship, being together today still feels like something way, way beyond normal.
And writing helps.

We write together as a team. The Cowboy and the Vampire came out of the recognition that there was something magical about our relationship. Two creative people from opposite worlds — Kathleen was born and raised in the heart of Washington, DC, Clark in the wide open spaces of Montana — with vastly different backgrounds (Clark grew up hunting and reading Louis L’Amour, Kathleen grew up marching in protests and reading Susan Sontag) coming together in a passionate cataclysm …

The clash of cultures love story at the heart of our own relationship carried over into The Cowboy and the Vampire. A good old boy, Tucker, falls for an ambitious city girl, Lizzie, who just happens to be a Vampire (even though she doesn’t know it yet). Even though they have nothing in common, the “paranormal” part of their romance gives them the power and conviction to face down all odds, including a horde of evil Vampires bent on their destruction.

Surviving against all odds and in spite of the natural tendency for things to degrade and decay is what any romance is about.

It’s not all roses and poetry and swirling supernatural energies for us. We have our share of “normal” fights. For example, Clark readily admits to flossing too loudly and vigorously. Kathleen has a low tolerance for loud, vigorous flossing. After many ridiculous fights, Clark now flosses in the hall and that entire sequence made it into the sequel we are currently working on, Blood and Whiskey as Tucker and Lizzie come to grips with their new life:

“All I really want is to have our baby and grow old with you and fight about stupid stuff like why you floss so goddamn loudly. But that’s not going to happen, is it? I can’t grow old, I can’t have a normal life, I can’t not kill people and the only possible solution I can think of is to just take my own life and be done with it. Is that what you want?”

Her fury subsided and she focused on the French fries suffocating under a congealing mass of brown gravy, stabbing them angrily with a fork. The silence stretched on between them until Tucker took a deep breath. “I really floss too loud?”

She choked out a sound that was half laughter and half anguish. “Yes, you do. It sounds likes you’re playing the fucking violin with your teeth. But I don’t care. I mean, I do care, it drives me batshit, but those are the kinds of things I want to fight about, not all of these huge, ridiculous things impossible things like how do I keep the Serpents from killing off humans and who do I feed on to stay alive without feeling like a sadistic freak. Mostly I can’t bear it that you think I’m some kind of monster.”
Flossing aside, we are happy to be part of a relationship that exists far beyond the normal. It’s a paranormal relationship, but aren’t they all?

About the book:
The Cowboy and the Vampirehttp://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=sb04e-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0738721611 brings together two of the most iconic characters — cowboys and vampires — and crashes them together in a story about love, culture clash and, of course, evil plans to take over the world. We’ve thrown in a healthy dose of laugh-out-loud humor, a rich portrayal of life in the modern West and fresh new take on the Vampire myth (religion meets evolutionary biology).

One of our favorite scenes from The Cowboy and the Vampire:
This scene takes place after a VERY romantic interlude high in the mountains just before the Vampires show up and ruin everything. Tucker convinces Lizzie to go skinny dipping and the water is much colder than expected:
She let out a blood-curdling shriek and sprinted buck naked for the house, narrowly missing Dad’s truck as he clattered up over the hill. If she was embarrassed she chose not to show it, just kept on running until she hit the cabin and slammed the door closed behind her.
Dad got out and hitched up his pants. “Bet that water’s cold.”
I pulled on my pants and boots and nodded my head. “Yep.
What the hell are you doing up here?”
“Tucker, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your trailer burned down.”
“What? Are you sure?”
“I think I know what a burnt trailer looks like.”
“Everything?” I asked, and he nodded.
We walked to the cabin and found Lizzie inside, fully dressed, wrapped in a blanket and sitting by the fire holding a cup of tea.
She looked at me hard. “You said it wasn’t cold. Jump in, you said. Invigorating, you said.”
“Tucker always did have a strange sense of humor,” Dad said, pouring himself a cup of coffee from the pot as I pulled on a flannel shirt.
“I wonder who I got that from?” I asked.
“Tucker’s trailer burned down,” Dad repeated to Lizzie.
“What?” Lizzie asked.
“Am I that hard to understand? It burned down. Ain’t nothing left. Coffee’s a tad bitter.”
“That’s the only coffee I got. Did Roy come out?” Roy was the fire chief in LonePine. He was also the brand inspector, justice of the peace, and sold vitamins mail order. Dad nodded a confirmation.
“What’d he say?” I asked.
“He said it looked like your trailer burned down.”

Reviews:

While mashing up all the stereotypical plot elements of Paranormal Vampire and Contemporary Western Romance, THE COWBOY AND THE VAMPIRE delivers unremitting fun, and a damn good read. --Diana Troldahl, Freshfiction.com

"The Cowboy and the Vampire" ... combined their interests - Hays grew up on a ranch, McFall was curious about religion and history - and was an experiment to see whether they could live and work together. --Jeff Baker, The Oregonian

...husband and wife writing duo Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall has succeeded in writing a unique story among all the vampire books that are out there today. --Bertena Varney, examiner.com

I enjoyed The Cowboy and the Vampire; the quirky characters, the new mythology of vampires, and the focus upon the uncertainty between evil and good. --Joanne L. -- LuxuryReading.com

The vampires in this book are Hays and McFall's own version and have an interesting link to early Christianity ... Some are good, some are less good, and some are joyfully bad. --Book Lovers Inc.

About the authors:
Kathleen McFall was born and raised in Washington, DC, and her experiences there, from protests and riots to hanging out in the corridors of the Supreme Court and wandering around the Capitol, filled her sense of place with history and granite. A geologist by training, she excelled in technical writing, translating complex scientific papers into engaging articles. Those skills are now focused on paranormal fiction. An avid reader, she spends every spare moment working with Clark Hays on their next book Blood and Whiskey.
Clark Hays was born in Texas and grew up mostly in Scotland and then Montana on a working ranch doing all the expected cowboy things — riding, roping, hunting and branding cattle. The majestic landscape and the solitude (the nearest neighbor was five miles away, the nearest town – 2,500 people – was 30 miles away) provided a constant source of inspiration, very little distractions and a chance to really be alone with his thoughts. In this solitude, he found his calling — writing — early. He’s currently working on Blood and Whiskey with Kathleen McFall.

Guest Author Stacey Thompson-Geer

Today I have author Stacey Thompson-Geer talking about
the world she created in Silver Moon ... and what an intriguing
world it is!

Thanks for stopping by, Stacey.

The World Of Silver Moon

Silver Moon is a different kind of world. We find a council for each supernatural being and they all have there differences. Somehow in this world there are a few that find it in there heart to get along for at least a little while.

Rose is not a part of her council. She hates them and they really don't like her. They basicly force her to do what they want to. The Vampire council has more power than any other group of Vampires in the U.S. The Vampire council is the most powerful of all the councils as well. This makes them a very lethal bunch.

Bobbie is trying to find out who killed her mother, but she needs money to do that. She defies the council of Witches to help find the Werewolf that Rose is after as well. She figures helping will get her in a good place with the Vampire council and will get her some money for what she needs.

Jerry is the Werewolf council leader. He tags along for some of the ride so he can catch and kill the Werewolf that is running around killing people. In his world, the Werewolves have a defined way of doing things. When one is chossen, it's a big deal and no one is to be turned without the blessing of the council.

These are just a part of the bigger world that will be revealed a little more in coming books and novellas. The bigger world is dark and full of different supernatural beings that will rock it in different ways.

Here's more about Silver Moon

Silver Moon
By Stacey Thompson-Geer

After 130 years, you’d think I would know better than to go looking for trouble, but I just can’t seem to help myself. The council wants me to catch a werewolf. I just want to paint my nails. Rose is a bitchy sarcastic vampire that ends up hunting a werewolf in, of all places, Las Vegas. She finds very quickly that things are not going to go as planned.

Guest Author Tawny Stokes

Today I have Author Tawny Stokes telling us why she
decided to self publish her release Static.

Thanks for being here today, Tawny.

Why I Chose to Self-Publish STATIC
By
Tawny Stokes
I have a near mid-list writing career under my alter ego Vivi Anna.  I’ve published with Kensington, Avon, and Harlequin, and still write for Harlequin, so why did I choose to self-publish my first YA, Static, and other books?  Because I could.  Authors have more choices now with their career than they’ve ever had.  It’s exciting now to be an author.  There are so many different paths you can choose to take to get the final end goal of being published.
But with everything, there are both pros and cons.  Here in point form are the pros and cons of self-publishing, for those thinking that this might be the path you want to take.
Pros:
Creative control over everything, including cover, blurb, pricing, release dates
Stellar royalty rate of 70%
Can write what you want when you want
Not constrained by trends, what’s popular, whims of editors and publishing houses
Can change price, blurb, book, cover, at any time
Can work with other authors you like, don’t have to be publishing house specific, or have to shop the concept
Can help up sales on other stuff, like epubbed titles or traditional titles
Can be compliments to other stuff, like epubbed titles or traditional titles
Cons:
Upfront costs for cover, editing, formatting, can be anywhere from $100 to $500
No gatekeeper to tell you if it sucks or not, have to rely on own judgement plus employ honest beta readers
Have to do tons of marketing online
Need a lot of work out there to be effective
Not everything is going to sell well

Beauty of all of this, is that you can do it all, you don’t just have to trad pub, or epub, or selfpub, you can do a little of all of it, depending on your needs.  If you are a fast writer and have lots of ideas/work, trying to get an agent/trad deal, at same time can epub, or self-pub, one doesn’t stop you from doing the other.  Self-pubbing, epubbing is not frowned upon any more, so have a good sales record in either can help you now.
If you have like 6 books under the bed that didn’t get agents or trad deals, dust them off, send them off to beta readers, and really examine if they are good enough to be published, if you feel they are, then send them to an epublisher, or self-pub them.  Start making a career for yourself, quit waiting for the industry to give you a career, because you could be waiting forever.

Now here's more about Static

Genre: Paranormal YA

During the summer before her senior year, 17 year old band groupie, Salem Vale, has been following her favorite punk rockers, Malice, from gig to gig hoping that one night she might get backstage and meet the sinisterly sexy guys. She’s been saving her virginity for the lead singer Thane.  One fateful evening she gets her wish.  It’s a dream come true.

Except the dream turns to a nightmare when she wakes up in a dumpster, tossed away like yesterday’s trash, with no memory of what happened the night before. She feels strange, different, as if something is trying to get out.  Soon she realizes she’s changing…turning into something not quite human.

Now a hunger deep inside claws at her to feed, to siphon energy from those around her.  Before she can do just that, Trevor, the band’s roadie shows up and stops her from killing.  With his help she learns to control the hunger inside, because he’s just like her.  And in return he wants her help to do one little thing…

Help him kill the members of Malice.

"STATIC is an edgy, dark, and delicious read! Tawny Stokes is a tasty new voice in YA fiction." –Michelle Rowen, national bestselling author

Early reviews and praise:
“You’re going to love Static — a deep, dark and sexy ride. This is a creepy and unique addition to the YA paranormal genre that goes a little bit further and gives a little bit more.” – Janet Gurtler, author of I’m Not Her and If I Tell, Sourcebooks Fire.
”STATIC is an edgy, dark, and delicious read! Tawny Stokes is a tasty new voice in YA fiction.” –Michelle Rowen, national bestselling author of Demon Princess series
“Static is an edgy, unique, whirlwind paranormal story with great action and amazing storytelling. This one leads you down a path you won’t forget. Don’t miss it!” – Denise A. Agnew award-winning author of Dark, Deadly Love

Tawny Stokes has always been a writer. From an early age, she’d spin tales of serial killers in love, vampires taking over the world, and sometimes about fluffy bunnies turned bunnicidal maniacs. An honour student in high school, with a penchant for math and English, you’d never know it by the foot high blue Mohawk and Doc Martens, which often got her into trouble. No longer a Mohawk wearer, Tawny still enjoys old school punk rock, trance, zombie movies, teen horror films, and fluffy bunnies. She lives in Canada with her fantastical daughter, two cats, and spends most of her time creating new stories for teens.
Tawny also writes adult paranormal/urban fantasy fiction under the name Vivi Anna, and is an aspiring screenwriter.

Good luck with the rest of your tour, Tawny!!!

Random pic Sunday- a little peace

Sometimes after a long week - chaotic days I
look towards mother nature for a little bit of
peace.   If I take this picture and put it on my
desktop (pretend the tv, computers, video games
aren't going in the background) I can find a few
minutes of peace at the end of a day.

Enjoy your evening before the Monday morning grind
begins all over again...

Guest Author Sonya Clark and a chance to win!!

Today I have author Sonya Clark here on my blog
discussing the Uncooperative Bad Guy from her release
Mojo Queen.

There is also a chance to win a signed book or ebook - the
details will be at the bottom ;)

Thanks for stopping by, Sonya!!

The Uncooperative Bad Guy
By Sonya Clark

When I began writing Mojo Queen I had a pretty good grasp of my characters, or so I thought. There was Roxie Mathis, the main character. Roxie is a paranormal investigator who can see auras and spectral energy and uses that ability along with hoodoo folk magic to help people with their supernatural problems. Then there’s her wingman, Daniel Rambin. Daniel is her best friend and they tell people they’re cousins, when in fact Daniel is her ancestor (I had to have a vampire in there somewhere). I knew the case Roxie would be working on revolved around possession. A group of people performed a ritual that called forth an evil entity and allowed it to possess the body of one of their number. The group had to have a leader of course, the one guy who really knew what he was doing and how dangerous it would be, and who was probably not being honest with the rest of the group. That was my bad guy. Or in Whedon parlance, my Big Bad.
His name is Blake Harvill, and he is mad, bad, and dangerous to know. He is a sorcerer who practices chaos magic. Whereas most magical systems stick to certain guidelines, chaos magic can draw from any and every pantheon and practice. It’s all about intent, and Blake aims to misbehave (sorry, I just had to go there). Or does he? At first glance it might seem like he helped a demon cross into the mortal plane so he could have himself an evil playmate with which to create mayhem and, well, chaos. But what if there was more to it than that? What if he never meant for things to get out of control? What if underneath his arrogance, his sexy smirk, his dark chocolate eyes, and the starfield aura that Roxie finds so captivating – what if under all that is a man who is lonely and maybe a little desperate? What if all he really wants is someone he can be himself with?
Right now Daniel, who is a big fan of classic country music, is somewhere warbling “Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places” horribly out of tune.
The more Blake became a fully formed character to me, the more obvious it became that he was not the Big Bad after all. And the more Roxie got to know him, the more she wanted him, even if he was mad, bad, and dangerous to know. Blake may have been uncooperative when I tried to make him a bad guy, but once I realized he was really the love interest in the story there was no stopping him. Sometimes you have to let a character tell you who they are, instead of forcing them into a role. I’m glad I listened to Blake.

Here's more about Mojo Queen and Sonya Clark:

Blurb:

Hoodoo and high magic are on a collision course.

Roxanne Mathis isn't like everyone else. Not only can she see auras and spectral entities, she can mix herbs and roots for spells to do good or ill. She can even light a candle without the benefit of a match. But when she’s hired to exorcise a demon from a young girl, she discovers the limits of her powers.

With her vampire cousin at her side and a sexy sorcerer chasing her on the rebound, Roxie sets out to send that evil entity back to where she came from.

Nothing is as it seems and Roxie’s in over her head. It’s not going to be enough for her to just be a paranormal investigator and old school root worker – to defeat this demon, she’s going to have to be the Mojo Queen.

Excerpt:

I sat in the chair opposite the loveseat, placing the candles on the coffee table. Glanced at him to make sure I still had his attention, which of course I did. One side of his mouth still curled up in a smirk, eyebrow quirked. I sat back, let myself sink into the comfy chair and relax as much as possible. First the candle on the left. Focusing on the wick, I visualized a tiny flame erupting from it--concentrating my will, pouring energy into my intention. I could feel myself sliding further into exhaustion as energy curled inside me, but after a long, agonizing moment the candle came to life. I let out a breath before I could stop myself, avoiding his gaze. I didn’t want him to know how much this was taking out of me, but I had a bad feeling it was obvious. I turned my attention to the other candle and though it took even longer this time, it too lit. I felt almost as bad as I had this afternoon.

Blake reached for a backpack on the floor I had not seen in the darkness. He opened it, fished something out, and tossed it to me. I didn’t so much catch it as let it fall in my lap. A chocolate candy bar.

It was my turn to quirk an eyebrow. Waving the bar at him I said, “What, is this to ward off dementors?”

The smirk became a genuine smile again briefly. “Something like that. You need to eat.”

I gave him a skeptical look.

“You know you’re using energy with that.” He gestured at the candles. “The energy needs to be replenished.”

I rolled my eyes but tore open the wrapper. The chocolate tasted, well, damn, like mainlining something illegal. Maybe he had a point. I was halfway through the bar when he spoke again, as if there had been no pause.

“Especially since you don’t really know what you’re doing yet.” Even in the low candlelight I had no trouble seeing the wicked amusement in his dark eyes.

I managed to finish chewing without choking, tossed the remainder of the candy bar on the coffee table and sat up straighter. “Why don’t you tell me why you’re here? Or better yet, tell me where I can find your demon lover? So I can send her back to Hell.”

“Well, actually, that’s exactly why I’m here, Roxanne.” Like we were discussing insurance or something. “I want you to find my demon lover.”

Gob-smacked, all I could manage was, “Huh?”

“And I want you to send her back to Hell.”

Author Bio:

Sonya Clark grew up an Army brat, living all across the United States as well as Japan and Germany by the time she graduated high school. Books were one of the few constants in her life. An eclectic reader, she always had a special love for the paranormal and is a lifelong fangirl of all things that go bump in the night.

A deep love of music is another constant thread in all of her fiction. She writes at a desk equipped with High John the Conqueror root and a mojo hand. She has worshipped at the mother church of country music, traveled the back roads of the blues highway, been to the crossroads at midnight, and though she’s never cooked up a mess of polk salad, she has been to Graceland four times.

She lives with her husband and Yorkie in Tennessee.
