Excerpt Thursday - The Huntress

My New Adult Series

Paranormal / Fantasy
OUT TODAY!

What would you do if you woke up in another realm where the residents are beings from fictional tales?

Where all those things that go bump in the night are real and other realities do exist!!

Damariss Maxx just woke up in a world where all those things that go bump in the night are real.

An alternate realm where the residents are beings she thought only existed in fiction.

Will she find the way to keep life normal and simple for those unknowing without losing her own sanity?

All she has to do now is find a way to protect the people in her world from the nightmares that have bleed from this other realm into it and fulfill a prophecy that says she's their huntress queen or doom this other world to a bleak, violent existence.

Neon green eyes moved over me and then paused on the arm still behind my back.  He sneered and steeped towards me again.
Taking a nice wide stance, I braced myself for some action and pulled the raptor free.  With a very practiced move, I flipped it from a hidden position to plain sight.  I locked eyes with him.  “You.  Back off now or I will slice you a whole new lifestyle.”
He stopped and there was no mistaking the shock on his face.  I heard a few snickers, but wasn’t about to look away from a pissy male that had just been put on pause by a woman half his size, even one that was having a bad day.
“Stand down.” A voice of definite authority ended all motion and sound in the room.
My glowing aggressor stepped back and moved aside so I had a clear sight line to the man behind the desk.  Nothing on him was glowing. To be honest, he was most likely the nicest-looking piece of man I’d ever seen.  The am-I-drooling-on-myself kind of nice.  He had long blonde hair that made my own look blunt and in need of some serious conditioning therapy.  His face was taken right off some Greek god lineage of masculine beauty and slapped onto what looked like a body to match—at least the part I could see above the desk.
“Everyone move back and let our guest have a little breathing room.”
Like soldiers marching, the six light-radiating beings stepped back as far as furniture and walls would allow.  The Greek Adonis gave a small nod of approval and then looked at me.  Hazel eyes with long lashes that made me jealous looked at me patiently.  Feeling really awkward, I slid the blade back into the sheath on my back and stood up straight.  Slowly his eyes moved to the only body that hadn’t moved away from me.
“Quinton, I was beginning to worry.  You’ve been gone three nights.”
“I was safe enough.” Again there was barely a trace of the lisp, as if he tried harder to conceal it then he had with me.
“I don’t doubt it, but next time call or at least turn on your phone.”
Phone?  Music to my ears thank you very much for this weirdness, now call me a cab.
“Please take a seat.”
Eyes widening, I looked back to see him looking at me.  Glancing around at the others, I moved and sat on the edge of a chair closest to the door, trying to stay at an angle that let me see if one of the glow-brights made a move toward me.
Quinton came over and stood behind the chair, his sad eyes conveying he had my back.  At this point I’d take what I could get.
The white haired one moved around to stand behind the desk. He crossed his arms, green eyes shooting darts at me.  One of the others moved over and stood behind him. He wasn’t as unearthly looking, with a dimmer shade of blue aura and red eyes.
“She’s looking at us like she can see us.” One of them said with fear in his voice.
Were my eyes supposed to be obscured?  I could see them and I wasn’t sure who but I could definitely smell one of them too and he was long overdue for a little personal hygiene.  Slowly they moved to stand where I could see them, my first thought right after you’re screwed was all those horror movie marathons were coming back to get me.  All that was missing at this point was the screaming damsel —oh wait, I could play that part.  I wasn’t much of a screamer and rarely freaked out, but there’s always a first time.
Glancing around the room again, hoping I’d missed the flashing exit sign I noticed the looks I was receiving ranged from shock to disdain.  Except for the cutie behind the desk.  Actually he fit more into the hottie category and leaned heavily to the sophisticated side of life with the way he just sat there observing everything.
Raising a hand, he waved off the others from speaking.  “Do you know how you got here?”
Saving the lengthy explanations on my own personal theories I just shook my head in answer.
“What’s the last thing you remember?”
He seemed like he was really trying to help me.  I shrugged.  “Not much, I was chasing down a bounty.”
“You’re a bounty hunter?”
I nodded and then froze when there were several gasps and sounds of shock in the room.  Quinton sounded like he sighed in relief. I hoped that meant a bounty hunter was good thing in this place.  “Where the hell is this?”
He leaned forward on the desk and looked like he was trying to think of a way to explain it to me.  “This is Alterealm, which is more or less the same time, same place as you came from, just a slightly different reality.” He smirked.  “I believe we’re what nightmares are based on.”
Raising an eyebrow, I looked around at the guys with their own light systems built in and their pimped out eyes.  “Are you seriously telling me that all those things that go bump in the night are true?”
The sexy one behind the desk flashed red eyes and I’m not kidding, fangs at me for a few seconds, just long enough to make sure I caught it all.
“Proof enough?”

Living in a world of unstable climate changes becomes a journey she won’t soon forget.  She has to be prepared for anything at all times out in the new country and has to be wary of every person she meets. All while staying out of the path of the new army.

When I stopped feeling thirsty, I knew I’d reached some sort of bridge.  A person should always feel thirst to some degree I imagined.  My stomach, was insistently reminding me that I hadn’t had more than a few sips in the time I’d been here—I still didn’t try to identify what the taste had been.  With each second I lay there in the dark, I felt myself starting to accept not getting out of here.
My teeth hurt from trying to chew the cord around my wrists to free my hands.  Why they only tied my hands I didn’t know, was I a threat to the two men that were always outside the door? In my weakened state probably not much of one, unless they were afraid I’d flick dirt off the floor at them when they came in.
Jerking awake I stopped and listened, a wolf howled and tears rolled down my cheeks.  I didn’t think I had any fluid left inside me to come out.  Would Kismet stick with Tremor?  I lie there gasping through my tears wishing some nice and seemingly normal person would come across them and look out for them.  Would that be asking too much?  Rubbing my filth covered hands over my cheeks I tried to erase the tears along with the guilt that I had failed the two creatures I called friends.
Drifting off I thought of Bobby and hoped he made it to the mountains in one piece.  As hard as I tried not to think about Kane, I did anyways.  Would he know what happened to me or just wander around trying to pick up my trail and find where I’d settled.  I wasn’t going to be settling anywhere—I now admitted it.
Closing my eyes I rested my head back against the hard dirt floor and pictured Kane’s silver eyes and that look he gave me when I annoyed him in some way.  He’d carry on, as he had been doing before I met him and those he looked out for would forever be grateful.
****
My eyes popped open and it took me several seconds to remember where I was.  My hip had pains shooting through it and I wanted to scream, but breathing took all the energy I had, there was none to spare for moaning out loud.  The voices outside drifted within hearing and I strained to hear what they said.  Was I being moved now?  I fought to keep my eyes open to be aware when they did come inside.  For half a second I could have sworn I heard Kane on the other side of the wall.  I knew I was delirious now.
I listened some more, trying to keep my focus.  What were they doing out there?  I couldn’t identify the sounds.  Carrying something heavy maybe with all the grunting?  I smirked alone in the dark; at least my imagination hadn’t left me.
I heard a noise that rang so familiar I had to sit up, something had growled on the other side of the wall.  In all the time they had kept me here I had not heard a dog or any noise that would lead me to believe there was one here.  The growl was louder and a memory crawled down my spine.  I had either lost all sense or Kismet was outside.

Excerpt:
Knocking once, he opened the door and went in.  I stepped in behind him and used him for cover as I looked around to scope out what I was going into.  There was no giant to be seen.  There were half a dozen really big guys standing, leaning or lounging, all facing a man sitting behind a desk.  The part that had me reach for the comfort of my raptor was that not one of them except the guy behind the desk seemed—human.
They weren’t like my giant puppy guy with the sappy eyes, no that would be okay at this point.  What they were, was, well I didn’t know.  They looked normal enough, yet their skin glowed and their eyes were bright colors; anything from green to lava red.  I’d wanted new shades besides orange. Definitely a be-careful-what- you-wish-for moment.
“Troy.”  Puppy man said without a single ish that I noticed. “I found her in the wasteland, she just appeared.”
My shaking hand grasped the handle tightly behind my back.
“Did you check her for weapons?”  A large creature with neon green eyes and long white hair, that gave him a glow of white all over stalked toward me.  He was dressed all in black leather like a biker and I found that to be the only normal thing about him.
“Back off Welsley.” My finder stepped forward and blocked this other thing’s path.
“Move aside Quapple or I’ll have to move you.  We can’t let a stranger just walk in here.”
My protector’s shoulders slumped and that alone made me want to stick my blade into Welsley just for being a big glowy jerk.  Glancing over his shoulder at me, his brown eyes apologizing, I gave him a little nod and stepped over so there was no one between the white guy and my path.

About J. Risk:   (J.Risk website)

I wanted to write a story that would fit into young adult, new adult and adult levels. Something that
was serious with fun elements—paranormal / fantasy that everyone could read and enjoy.

I've even decided to use J. Risk as the pen name for this to separate this series from my other writing which is definitely adult reading material.

Excerpt Thursday Solitary Witchling

Maddy sighed and closed the book.  She stood there debating on whether to go out and tell Colin help was on the way, or to sit here and try to figure it out more before Ginger got here.  Colin came bolting into the room.
“A woman just came out of your tree!”  He looked over his shoulder and then back to her.
Maddy grimaced, she probably should have warned him about that.  “She’s come to help figure this out.”
He turned and watched as the woman reached the house.  “A-and popping out of a tree is okay?”
Maddy glanced behind him to see Ginger coming in.  “Uh, yeah.”
Colin turned and backed up to the desk, then perched on the edge of it.
Ginger came in the room and stopped short, looking at the man leaning on the desk.  “Oh, I hadn’t thought to ask if it was a man from our community, but I see by the look on his face he’s not.”

Colin shook his head and sighed a loud breath, “Lady, I don’t even think we’re from the same planet.”

Excerpt Thursday - After the Silence - Bree (part 1)

Kismet sat in his usual observation mode looking all around us as if he was waiting for something interesting to happen.  He whined in a peculiar way that I’d never heard and the hair on the back of my neck stood up. Tremor pranced on the earth in an uneasy way. At the same moment I moved cautiously to the edge of the opening birds flew up out of the trees scattering in every direction.  It was suddenly so quiet; not even the slightest noise could be heard.
With the knife already in my hand I went and stood just under the lowest part of the overhang, scanning the area around us trying to pick up on whatever they were sensing.   I was just taking a breath to speak and calm them when the ground beneath my feet quivered.  A nauseous feeling flooded through me, one that I knew all too well. My heart pumped triple time and my brain flashed back to last huge quake we’d had.
I had a few seconds, only enough to decide if I wanted to take the chance outside of the shelter with the tall trees very nearby or risk being suffocated under it if it collapsed.  The dirt under my boots rocked again, more noticeably this time.  Tremor reared up and called out his fear.  Racing towards him, I grabbed his halter and pulled him back closer to the cover.  Kismet whined again, almost an agonizing plea making me wonder if they knew something I didn’t.  In a building I knew the rules; stand in a doorway but out here there was an absence of doorways leaving me at a loss of what to do.
The next movement was not a warning but a full scale shift.  The trees around us protested with loud cracks and sounds that came to me like moans of pain.  I couldn’t say how long this went on, but it felt like hours.  Clinging to the halter, I tried to keep Tremor from bolting, I couldn’t help thinking if he really wanted to leave I wouldn’t offer much of an obstacle with my size.
There were no dishes breaking or paintings banging against the wall.  The sound of glass shattering wasn’t one I missed.  All of nature was silent as the earth bucked below in a cry of rage.
I was panicking inside, but trying to stay calm to reassure my animals to lessen the panic they were feeling.  The earth behind me slid down from its perch and would have knocked me off my feet if I weren’t hanging onto the horse with all the strength I had.  A deafening crack was the only warning we had, I don’t know what made me look up but when I saw an older tree leaning towards us, I released Tremor’s halter and smacked his neck to get him to move.  He didn’t hesitate as he bolted in the opposite direction.  I stumbled behind him and landed on my knees when the grassy floor distorted taking my balance away.  Uncertain what else to do I flipped onto my side and covered my head, hoping the tree fell far enough away I’d survive it.

Excerpt:

The sound of wings flapping had my undivided attention; I stopped and held my breath trying to locate the direction it was coming from. The moment I honed in on the area the bird had been I wished I hadn’t. Here I was half way to the middle of the clearing in snow up past my knees and coming out of the trees roughly thirty feet from me were two very rough, huge men. I had twenty seconds grace before they spotted me, just enough time to turn in the snow and take the first step in what would likely end up being the most difficult run of my life.

Running in snow this deep was like running through water. If your feet didn’t clear it you got nowhere. I hadn’t stopped long enough to measure the height of the men quickly gaining on me, but I was fairly certain their long legs would move through this snow faster than my own.

As I hit the tree line again, I hesitated long enough to pick a direction. Kismet and I had been through this area enough times I knew most of it without thinking now. Slipping in the snow I changed directions and headed towards the hill that led to the river bed. If I could out-maneuver them in the densest part of the trees I might just be able to put a big enough gap between us that they’d give up.

Chancing a glance over my shoulder I noted one thing. They were large enough it would take four of me to make this anywhere near equal. My heart was thrumming, pumping blood through my veins in a chaotic beat. A part of me knew I couldn’t outrun them, but I had to try. Turning, I bolted back towards a tight grouping of trees. I could hear the pounding of their feet hitting the ground behind me and had one second to regret the one time I didn’t let Kismet come with me. He would have evened the odds.

One of them was close enough I could hear his heavy breathing over my own as I dodged between two trees I knew he wouldn’t be able to go through. My coat was actually slowing me down, but it held the knife and gun and there was no way I was dropping either of those right now. I heard him curse behind me and knew I only had seconds before he would have me. Ducking left, I stopped and spun around at the same time. My knife was now in my hand held down against my side as I gasped to settle my breathing. He stood a foot away from me and looked really pissed with the fact that I had made him run after me.

I wanted to look around for the other one, but didn’t dare take my eyes off of him. A familiar flick sound brought my attention to his hand to see a blade slide smoothly from the handle it had been folded into. There was nothing I could say that was going to change this man’s plans. His eyes were wide and bored into mine with a look of craziness. A branch snapping behind me was the only warning I got before a big arm wrapped around my waist and pulled me back into a hard chest.

They spoke to each other and it wasn’t in any language I understood, then again I only knew English. The tone the man in front of me used and the sudden smirk on his face told me I was in deep shit. There was no way, no how this was happening to me. I refused to be a victim. The one behind me tightened his hold, making breathing hard. He rubbed his face against my neck making my skin crawl. The other one waved the knife in front of me a few times and then used it to push open my coat. He grinned and said something to the one that was breathing on my neck.

The adrenaline was pumping so fast through my body I didn’t know how I was able to not vibrate. Now or never! Lowering my head, I relaxed my body as much as I could. Taking a deep breath, I threw my head back and brought my hand with the knife up at the same time, aiming for the arm around me. The loud crack and sudden pain in my head told me I’d connected hard with the face behind me. He cursed and let me go just as the other one lunged towards me. I felt the sting across my cheek as I brought the knife down and across his chest. He yelped.

"I really like the level of description,  I LOVE the development and personality of Tremor and Kizzy, and I really like where this book could go..."

~ Andretta Schellinger

"This first installment sets the scene and it' s a bit bleak. Hardships and danger are the order of the day, and for a woman out on her own it can be especially daunting. I did enjoy Bree's character, her attitude..."

Excerpt:

The snapping and crunching of branches told me something was moving through the trees. Turning the flash light off, I hunched down to be as small and invisible as possible.  I listened in the darkness for anything that would let me know where the noise had come from and what had made it.  Voices were carried to me in the dark, a man and a woman.  I moved slowly back towards my things and sat with my back against the tree straining to see in the dark.
Time stopped as I waited to see if the voices kept moving or came closer.  I wasn’t sure what I’d do if they did come closer.  I touched the handle of the knife inside my coat, hoping this wasn’t when I find out if I could use it.  Leaves rustled from behind me.  I held my breath and pushed back against the tree, waiting.  When I heard a low growl coming from around the tree I think even my heart even paused.
I had strangers coming closer on one side of me and an animal voicing a warning behind me.  Tremor shook his head and pranced a few times and the growling got louder.  I sat there trying to gauge what was the most important and decided there was no way I was going to let something happen to my horse.  Sliding up the tree as quietly as I could, while focusing on the voices, I tried to recall every skill instilled in me, drawing more blanks than anything useful.
Pulling the knife from the pocket, I prayed it was sharp enough to cut the rope I’d tied Tremor to.  I guessed I had about fifteen seconds to cut it and get to the horse before whatever was growling took a bite off one of my legs or other body parts.  Chewing my lip, I hoped I could still get on his back without the saddle.  The plan was to ride like hell and come back later for my stuff—if we could find it again.

Chapter One can be found on my website.

I hope you enjoy Bree’s story as much as I did writing it. She will take you to many new places as she’s learning to survive in the new chaotic world.
When I began writing Bree’s story, it was meant to be a single story about a young woman trying to survive on her own out in the wilderness after the entire planet changed. Half way through the story I realized that there was so much more to tell, making the four parts of Bree’s story Volume 1.  I hope you’ll join me as we explore the lives of the survivors in After the Silence.
